Split Gills - Schizophyllum commune
These mushrooms perfectly exemplify persistence, and were covered in snow. Delicate fruiting bodies that were 1-2 cm wide. They had fuzzy, white upper surfaces and gill-like folds on the under surfaces. The gills ranged in color from white to brown depending on age.
Habitat: Growing on rotting wood in a mixed forest.
Note: Although it is considered inedible in the United States and Europe, this species is widely consumed in other parts of the world. Also, it may have immunomodulatory, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
"Schizophyllum commune" is a species of fungus in the genus "Schizophyllum". The mushroom resembles undulating waves of tightly packed corals or a loose Chinese fan. Gillies or split-gills vary from creamy yellow to pale white in colour. The cap is small, 1–4 centimetres wide with a dense yet spongey body texture.
