Red-tailed Hawk - Buteo jamaicensis This is Veronica. She&#039;s a wild hawk with an interesting story...Veronica has lived on the property at White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield, Connecticut for at least 10 years. She was first noticed one morning when the wildlife rehabilitator went to feed their resident hawk, and found Veronica sitting on top of the hawk&#039;s cage. She hopped to the side and watched as the wildlife rehabilitator fed the hawk in the cage. The worker threw Veronica a mouse, and she&#039;s been around ever since. Sometimes they won&#039;t see her for a couple months, but she always comes back and will wait on top of the building for someone to come out and toss her a treat. You can see a bit of red guts on her beak that was left over from her most recent snack.<br />

  1. She's a beauty! Posted 6 years ago
    1. She really is! And, such a character. She swoops and circles overhead in hopes that someone will toss her a treat. She's a cute beggar, but it's so odd to see a wild animal act this way. She is *almost* as dramatic as my cats are when they are begging for a treat. Posted 6 years ago
      1. Didn't know you had cats!
        mumbles "explains a lot" ;)

        1. Lol, I have 2 cats; their names are Neptune and Ceres. Posted 6 years ago
          1. Those are great names, what are their genders? Posted 6 years ago
            1. Male and female. Neptune is the boy, and he's a giant at about 18lbs. They are siblings that we adopted 4-years ago. Their mother was rescued by a friend of mine after she was thrown out of a car window while pregnant and then went into premature labor. Their photo is one of my featured pics on my FB timeline. 1. Just checked it, they look so cute. The red one reminds me of my brother's cat, he has a very wild character, hardly domesticated. The black and white one looks derpy and funny :)

And more importantly, what a rescue, and what a swing to the better for those cats ending up in your home, every reason to be proud!

                1. Thanks! They are sweet cats. The orange tiger, Neptune, is a big baby. Ceres is definitely derpy and very mischievous. Posted 6 years ago

The red-tailed hawk is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk," though it rarely preys on standard sized chickens. It breeds throughout most of North America, from western Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as Panama and the West Indies, and is one of the most common buteos in North America.
