  1. Hmmm, looks like a flycatcher indeed and that makes it tricky as there are so many. I'll ask Thibaud what he thinks. Posted 6 years ago
  2. Update: first assessment by Thibaud is possibly a juvenile warbler based on the tail and the yellow gape. He'll try to check his books once he gets to it. Posted 6 years ago
    1. Oh wow, thanks for checking up on this Ferdy! Posted 6 years ago
      1. The yellow gape only means it's a juvenile something. Indeed, that very striking tail band had me thinking warbler, but I can't find a match! Plus, Christine you thought it was kingbird, which are significantly bigger, and with quite a different behavior. Eastern kingbird is one possibility, it's in range, and does have a black and white tail, but I'm not convinced. So I have 3 questions for you: Did this bird sit still for a long time on this perch, do you have other photos, and would you let me upload your photo to birdofrum, where the resident experts would surely have an ID within a matter of hours?

        1. Thanks so much Thibaud! My thought that it was a kingbird was just an uneducated guess based on coloration. Interesting that you ask if it sat still! I almost included that fact in the description, but assumed it was irrelevant. Yes, it did sit still for a long time. I have one other photo that I will upload tonight and link here. And, sure, please feel free to upload it to the bird forum. Thanks! Posted 6 years ago
          1. Here's the other shot:

            1. Aaah so it's not an actual black bar on the tail, it's just a shadow! OK definitely a flycatcher, not a warbler. Actually now I'm thinking it's a juvenile phoebe, but I'll still ask the experts. Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago
              1. Thank you Thibaud! Posted 6 years ago
                1. Yup, juvenile eastern phoebe it is! Posted 6 years ago
                  1. Cool! Thanks again :) Posted 6 years ago
                    1. My pleasure! Posted 6 years ago

The Eastern Phoebe is a small passerine bird. This tyrant flycatcher breeds in eastern North America, although its normal range does not include the southeastern coastal United States.
