  1. Nice! I've never seem them with non-breeding plumage! Posted 6 years ago
    1. Christine, thanks. From a distance they look quite similar to the female. Seeing these ducks, where we are, year round and fairly close helps in the “visual differentiation”. Gary Posted 6 years ago
      1. Jealous of this spotting! Love these Artic duckies! I remember the eiders in New England icy waters as if nothing :-) Posted 6 years ago
        1. Hey, please don’t be jealous (I have admired your underwater photos for quite a while). As I mentioned these ducks are around all year so bring your camera(s)! Posted 6 years ago
          1. Hahaha! Don't worry is only "healthy-jealous"! I would love to see them but in Belgium I live inland. I think if I go further up North to Holland for example I may see some wintering birds in the sea. When I lived in Boston I could see them more often as I was closer to the sea and in a colder area. I love these ducks. Thanks for sharing! :-) Posted 6 years ago

The harlequin duck is a small sea duck. It takes its name from Harlequin , a colourfully dressed character in Commedia dell'arte. The species name comes from the Latin word "histrio", "actor". In North America it is also known as lords and ladies. Other names include painted duck, totem pole duck, rock duck, glacier duck, mountain duck, white-eyed diver, squeaker and blue streak.
