American Red Squirrel - Tamiasciurus hudsonicus
Small squirrel with reddish fur and a white venter. They are very noisy and highly territorial.
Red squirrels are known to tap sugar maple trees to harvest the sugar in the sap. To do this, they actually bite into the tree trunk in order to puncture the xylem.
The American red squirrel is one of three species of tree squirrel currently classified in the genus ''Tamiasciurus'' and known as pine squirrels. American red squirrels are also referred to as pine squirrels, North American red squirrels, and chickarees.
