Needle Ice Formations
It was a bitter day, but I got to view some really beautiful ice columns (aka "needle ice") whilst on a short hike with my husband and father-in-law back in January of 2018.
These ice formations occur when above freezing (moist) soil comes into contact with below freezing air. Water flowing below the soil is pulled up to the surface via capillary action and is frozen on contact with the air. Needle-like columns are formed as the water continues to be drawn up to surface.
