Hardwood Swamp

This is a typical hardwood swamp found in the northeastern US. I frequently have to muck through these to get where I'm going and find some really cool slime molds and lots of frogs while passing through.

  Well. It depends. I have rainboots, which go up to my knee and work the best. I also have hip-waders, which I rarely wear because they are huge on me and are seriously annoying to lug around - unless your main purpose is to peruse mud flats or swamps. Sometimes, I wear just my hiking boots, which gets nasty and is only a last resort. And, on occasion, I go barefoot (if I know the swamp well and am assured that there are no super pokey sticks in there)...Yes, really. It's not a super big deal to me because I grew up wading through swamps barefoot so I didn't ruin my shoes and thus get in trouble ;) Posted 6 years ago

      Haha! I like the surprise of not knowing. But, it is a bit creepy, especially when the muck is much thicker than anticipated. I have gotten stuck up to my thighs before, which was quite scary. I would never do it in a place with venomous snakes and other dangerous critters. The worst I encounter are leaches. Posted 6 years ago
