  1. Looks like a Crambid, maybe Petrophila sp. Posted 6 years ago
    1. Thanks! That genus looks like a match and brings us a lot closer. A few candidates:

None match strongly, except for the two-banded one, looks close but I'm in doubt.

      1. You're welcome.

Hmm, I agree - no strong species matches. Maybe yours is just a super fresh specimen made extra vibrant via flash? Or, maybe it's a different species, haha. I don't know. It's gorgeous though. I wish it had held its wings together to aid in comparison!

        1. Definitely agree with Petrophila sp.! It is thought the patterning on the hindwings is meant to mimic Salticid eyes!

    1. Haha, I can relate to that. Yesterday I went through Andreas Kay's entire moth portfolio, 30 pages of them, in an effort to reverse-match it with some unidentified moths. Henriette could hear me swearing repeatedly as about 5 times in a row I found an exact visual match and the caption said "moth". Now when I'm working on the moths she says "Looks like a....moth".

      Thanks for confirming the genus!

        1. Could even be a full match? It matches at a detailed level, only seeing a different in color tone. Hard to compare as that seems to be the only photo of it online. Posted 6 years ago
          1. I think so. I havent seen anything else similar. Posted 6 years ago
            1. This is the most similar species I've found as well, but the dark spots on the hindwings don't match. And, your moth has a white triangular patch on its thorax. Those are the main differences that I see, which may or may not matter. Posted 6 years ago
              1. Yep. Probably safest to leave it at genus level, but we got closer :D Posted 6 years ago
