One-Flowered Cancer Root (Aphyllon uniflorum)
Growing near a rocky area (by a waterfall) in a forested area. Aphyllon uniflorum is a non-photosynthetic, parasitic species of plant. It does not bear true leaves or produce chlorophyll for this reason. It relies entirely on other plants for its nutrients, making it an obligate parasite.
Note: These are really old photos (from 2009)!!
The one-flowered cancer root is an annual parasitic herbaceous plant. It is native to much of North America, where it is a parasitic plant, tapping nutrients from many other species of plants, including those in the families Asteraceae and Saxifragaceae and in the genus Sedum.
