An Orbital Ring
The reddish purple orbital ring is an identifying feature of the Glaucous-winged gull. It has been found that gulls can identify specific people and allow known people to approach them closer than they would allow others. I am ashamed to say that we have fed this gull (non vegetable food composting is not available on island so do you throw it out in the garbage or feed it to a waiting gull?) so it now recognizes us. It would be nice to think that it sits on the railing looking at the Christmas tree in the window but that is wishful thinking.

The glaucous-winged gull is a large, white-headed gull. The genus name is from Latin "Larus" which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird. The specific "glaucescens" is New Latin for "glaucous" from the Ancient Greek, "glaukos", denoting the grey color of its wings.
