A Glaucous-winged Gull in Its Winter Finery
The bright white head feathers are gone and are replaced with dull gray ones. This gull is sitting on our deck railing looking through our living room window hoping for a treat oblivious to the heavy rain. Slim pickings with low tides occurring while its dark.

The glaucous-winged gull is a large, white-headed gull. The genus name is from Latin "Larus" which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird. The specific "glaucescens" is New Latin for "glaucous" from the Ancient Greek, "glaukos", denoting the grey color of its wings.
