Urban Redback A sub-adult female Redback resting on a silver drain cover where she has made her new home. There were several males within the vicinity.
I think she looks rather striking against this minimalist background. As she matures, the abdomen will become more rotund, will darken to fully black and the orange markings will turn deep red.
1. The things you see when peering down a drain. Mmm, how to present a spider/drain shot at least somehow artistically! Not two of people's favourite subjects ha ha. More often than not I'll find these making nests near something metal, they love it hot and dry. I know it's a drain, but we've had no significant rain for months and months. Posted 6 years ago
      1. Oh, wow - are you in a drought? When I saw this shot, I was thinking that it might not be the smartest spot to set up a web since it could get washed away! Posted 6 years ago

The redback spider is a species of venomous spider indigenous to Australia. It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus "Latrodectus", the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside.
