Mojave Desert Tortoise
The lonely Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is listed as vulnerable on IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This one moves slowly but keeps an eye on me, close to the Kelso Sand Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, California. Conservation Status: imperiled (S2) in California, US (NatureServe).
The desert tortoises are two species of tortoise native to the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico and the Sinaloan thornscrub of northwestern Mexico. ''G. agassizii'' is distributed in western Arizona, southeastern California, southern Nevada, and southwestern Utah.
