Only doubt I have is the white tip at the end of the antennae, so will try to confirm this species. Colombia,Colombia 2018,Colombia South,Fall,Geotagged,Nadiacris metallica,Orito,Putumayo,South America,World Click/tap to enlarge Species introCountry intro

  1. I'm super impressed by the diversity of grasshoppers that you've shared so far! Posted 6 years ago
    1. I'm partly discovering it after the fact. In particular for the small ones, at one point you start to ignore them as a subject as they are numerous and you think they're all the same species. But they're not. Lesson learned :) Posted 6 years ago
    2. I particularly love the really really weird ones, like the horseface as well as these:

Mole Cricket, Montezuma, Colombia Quite an insect highlight of our trip, as we've never seen a creature like this before. This mole cricket (Gryllotalpidae) came swimming(!) super fast out of a pond at night as we lit it with flashlights and then made way to jump on shore and onto a low wall. Apparently they are part of the grasshoppers and crickets family, yet as you can see, they look quite unusual. They live most of their life underground, and feature strong jaws and a heavily armored chest plate.

I had no idea of this family even existing, so it blew our minds.
Heavily spiked katydid - side view, Tatama National Park, Colombia Crazy appearance on this one. I haven't seen anything like it yet, and can't find anything online that looks like this either. Note the heavily spiked legs, yet also the armor-like appendage near the head. Top view and head closeup:
Update: A Colombian expert suggests it's a lichen katydid, but can't bring it down to a single species. Check out this other lichen katydid here:
1. Agreed! The weirder, the better in my opinion! Posted 6 years ago
