A Waxy Cap, Hygrocybe cuspidata?

The bright cap of this little mushroom was easy to see even on the dark forest floor.

  1. Is the stem slimy (it looks like it may be)? Also, is this under redwood? If so, this is the other blackening Hygrocybe species in North America, Hygrocybe singeri. Posted 6 years ago, modified 6 years ago
      1. Hi Lisa, sorry no redwoods around here. Mixed forest with Douglas fir, Hemlock, some pines and alder. As for the slimy stem... the photo was taken with a flash. The stem was rather dry unlike the cap which was very wet considering the dry forest floor. Gary Posted 6 years ago
        1. Redwoods aren't always necessary for H. singeri. If the stem was just slightly moist (maybe oily) rather than slippery, then this might be H. cuspidata instead. I'd stick with your first guess! Posted 6 years ago
          1. Thanks, and, yes, with me it is definitely a guess! LOL! Posted 6 years ago
            1. It's a good one, Gary! <3 Posted 6 years ago
              1. My apologies. This should be Hygrocybe conica (not sure where my mind was yesterday)! H. cuspidata does not stain and this one is clearly staining black! Posted 6 years ago
                1. Thanks a bunch. Finally, satisfaction. Now on to the next one! Posted 6 years ago

"Hygrocybe conica", commonly known as the witch's hat, conical wax cap or conical slimy cap, is a colourful member of the genus "Hygrocybe", found across northern Europe and North America. Originally described as "Hygrophorus conicus", it may be a complex of closely related and similar species.
