Greater flamingo - Phoenicopterus roseus
Record number flamingos this year at Atanasovsko lake, Burgas, 24th Sep. 2018. Usually up to 10 birds are recorded each year at that time during the migration. Last year about 80 birds were recorded, and now - 126.
The Greater flamingos breed in Turkey in Lake Tuz which is at high altitude and they migrate to winter in Africa and Greece at Kerkini Lake, Doiran lake, Kolachori lagoon. Occasionally a couple of birds, due to weather conditions, wind and other factors appear in South-East Bulgaria, near Burgas. But never such a big group. Now it is supposed to be from a new breeding colony in Ukraine. Still not confirmed.

The greater flamingo is the most widespread species of the flamingo family. It is found in parts of Africa, southern Asia, and southern Europe. Some populations are short distance migrants, and sightings north of the breeding range are relatively frequent; however, given the species' popularity in captivity, whether or not these are truly wild individuals is a matter of some debate.
