  4. I actually think that this is the Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias Striatus) based on the relatively reduced facial striping compared to the Least Chipmunk (Neotamias minimus). It is a pity that we don't have the location, as the Least Chipmunk is not found on the East Coast of the US. I also hate to be so pedantic, but not all chipmunks are found in North America, the Siberian Chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus) is found across Russia and in Northern China and the island of Hakkaido in Japan (and even a small introduced population in the Netherlands). No, I am not a Chipmunk freak - but in trying to identify one of my photos for JungleDragon I ended up learning all of this fascinating stuff - thanks JD. Posted 8 years ago

The eastern chipmunk is a chipmunk species found in eastern North America. It is the sole living member of the chipmunk subgenus "Tamias", sometimes recognised as a separate genus. Its name comes from the Odawa word "ajidamoonh" or the Ojibwe word "ajidamoo", which translates literally as "one who descends trees headlong."
