Like many other members of the Orobanchaceae family, Agalinis purpurea is a hemiparasitic plant. It uses haustoria to make a connection to the roots of host plants, siphoning nutrients from them. However, this species also has photosynthetic capabilities and can produce its own energy sources. The Agalinis genus is the largest genus of hemiparasitic plants in the eastern US.<br />
