Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana)
Please excuse the blurriness of the photo! This young opossum was making its way back under our porch. Unfortunately, we have an entire family of these cuties under our crawlspace. They have even invaded our air vents and have caused some damage. We are working on relocating and excluding the family, but it is a very tricky process.
We haven't seen a mother opossum anywhere around yet, so we are unsure if she has become the victim of a predator or an automobile. This particular individual was roaming around in daylight and its poor vision was quite apparent! It nearly walked right up to my husband!
The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found in North America north of Mexico.

The Virginia opossum, commonly known as the North American opossum, is the only marsupial found in North America north of Mexico. In the United States it is typically referred to simply as a "possum". A solitary and nocturnal animal about the size of a domestic cat, and thus the largest opossum, it is a successful opportunist.

So far, they are proving very tricky to capture. Thankfully they are big enough for catch and re-release. We are going to get a smaller trap as the weight-activated plates are not activating (and they are just getting free meals). Haha! Unfortunately, we have started to notice some odors throughout the house--and we have even heard fighting under the crawlspace. My pets are freaking out over it as much as me! Posted 6 years ago
