Words of our guide in Colombia when somebody said "ugh, cockroaches are so disgusting!": "It's cleaner than you!"

    1. Thanks, Ferdy!

I have a lot of respect for animals, but I draw a line when they start invading/destroying my personal space. Most of my life I was rather poor, so my living arrangements were not always free of invaders like rats, mice, and cockroaches. Don't get me started on the first place Jason and I rented (before we were married). Waking up to cockroaches crawling on our faces was not a pleasant experience!

I have to admit I'm also pretty terrified of rodents in my personal space (I was bitten as a child), but I think they are so adorable in the wild. It is a very strange thing!

      1. I can totally relate, Lisa. I still am disgusted with most insects crawling on me, it's where I draw the line. I also remember we used to camp during summer where the tent me and my brother slept in, were always crawling with bugs. It's an irrational fear but it feels as real as it gets: I don't want them on me, and definitely don't want to sleep in a room where they would crawl over me. I don't think I will ever get over this fear, and it's pretty normal, very few people would not have it.

One of the (few) advantages of a cold climate as seen in the Netherlands is that for the better part of the year, it's too cold for insects.

        1. A friend of mine once woke up in the middle of the night, covered in spiders. There must have been sacs of spider eggs above her bed that hatched while she was sleeping, and they streamed down and landed all over her. Posted 7 years ago
          1. *shudders* Oh my gosh, Christine. That is horrifying! I think I would need therapy after that! Posted 7 years ago
            1. Seriously. I would totally freak out.

This same woman had an incident with a bat as well...She got up during the night to go to the bathroom, and as she was sitting there, she heard a noise. She looked down, and perched upside down in the toilet was a bat - that she had just peed on.
