Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria tircis), Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands
One of the most common butterflies in the Netherlands, since it has 3 generations per year, it can be seen from March to November. This is likely the Pararge aegeria tircis sub species, the northern counterpart of the main species, where the sub species is a bit more faint in term of color.
My guess is that this is the male, as they are known to be very territorial, positioning themselves on a high sunny spot to fend of any competitors.
The speckled wood is a butterfly found in and on the borders of woodland areas throughout much of the Palearctic realm. The species is subdivided into multiple subspecies, including "Pararge aegeria aegeria", "Pararge aegeria tircis", "Pararge aegeria oblita", and "Pararge aegeria insula".
