
Spear Thistle flower heads, Heeswijk-Dinther, Netherlands
One of a handful of thistle species found growing in the wild in the Netherlands. They are relatively large plants. They are typically identified by a few factors that include plant height, leaf patterns, hair type (straight or feathered), amount of flower heads and bulb size and shape.

''Cirsium vulgare'' is a species of the genus ''Cirsium'', native throughout most of Europe, western Asia, and northwestern Africa. It is also naturalised in North America and Australia and is as an invasive weed in some areas.
