  1. It's always funny to me how small birds will fearlessly harass much larger raptors, though of course, rarely the kind that actually hunt birds... Posted 7 years ago, modified 7 years ago
    1. Nesting instincts seem to make them lose all common sense and fear, I also see it with garden birds actively trying to chase away our cat. Posted 7 years ago
      1. Oh wow, how does that work out for the birds? Posted 7 years ago
        1. They keep a distance of about 1m and try to chase it away with loud calling. Some fly straight at the cat and only at the last moment make a sharp turn. It's mostly bluff. Posted 7 years ago
  2. Wonderful capture, Thibaud! Was it defending its nest? Or? Posted 7 years ago
    1. Hmm I don't know, I just spotted the hawk circling overhead, and the kingbird appeared out of nowhere and started harassing it. Posted 7 years ago

The broad-winged hawk is a small hawk of the genus "Buteo". During the summer, some subspecies are distributed over eastern North America, as far west as British Columbia and Texas; they then migrate south to winter in the Neotropics from Mexico south to southern Brazil.
