Male of this species, which is named "big long body" in dutch, since there's also a "small long body". Species in this genus are typically small, lengthy and slender, in particular the males. Another trade mark of some of the males of this species is that the patterns on their abdomen seem faint or unfinished.

The Long hoverfly, "Sphaerophoria scripta" is a European species of hoverfly. They can complete a full life cycle in as little as sixteen days, and a maximum of nine generations may occur in a single year.
