Metrosideros thomasii
It's not officially spring, but it sure feels like it. New Zealand Christmas bush in flower once again, delighting both humans, birds and insects alike. Flame-red fluffy flowers on a very dense shrub, perfect for hedging and windbreaks growing up to 5 m. Thrives in coastal, windy and exposed sites. I have two in my garden, ideal refuge plants for native birds.
Similar species: Myrtles, Evening Primroses.
