Syzygites megalocarpus Growing on Lactarius Mushroom
Fugus on fungus!
Syzygites megalocarpus is a mold that parasitizes mushrooms. It colonizes their surfaces with yellow fuzz that becomes blue or gray as it develops. Unlike some species that completely engulf their victims, transforming them beyond recognition, Syzygites megalocarpus usually leaves its victim recognizable. The mold looked and felt like cotton candy!
Habitat: Growing on a Lactarius sp. mushroom, which was growing on the ground in a mixed forest.
Similar species: Mucorales
