Fisher Scat - Pekania pennanti This was my first time finding fisher scat! Exciting, I know - except it really is exciting!

I found this cute scat on top of a rotting, fallen tree in a deciduous forest. The tree was caught on another tree, and was leaning at an angle like a playground slide. The longer piece was about 3 cm long and 1 cm diameter.

I thought it looked foxy, except that it was higher off the ground than I would usually find fox poop. Thanks to an ID site on Facebook, it has now been assumed to be fisher scat!
1. Awesome find! Not to mention another extension of vocabulary: cute scat.
Seriously looks like a very interesting native mammal. Do you know if they're shy? Nocturnal, diurnal?

    1. It's definitely "cute" scat. Someone on FB commented that it looks like a granola bar ;P

They are pretty shy animals and are mainly nocturnal. One interesting thing about fishers is that they are one of the few animals that prey on porcupines. They attack their face first, then once the porcupine is weakened, they flip it over and start eating it through its underbelly! Gruesome, but crafty.

Do you realize what you just did? During our last Colombia trip, we ate granola bars all day long, to stay energized during hikes. Homemade by our guide. We loved them so much that we requested an even larger stock this year, when we will have the same guide.

Do you know what I will be thinking about every single time we will eat one in the next trip?

        1. Oh, haha - Oops! Looks like berries, seeds, figs, etc. Yum! Enjoy your granola bars ;P Posted 7 years ago
        2. Bahaha!

And yum!! Homemade granola bars are the BEST!

          1. I can only agree. As for high quality food, I personally prefer made-in-somebody-elses-home-made food. Posted 7 years ago
            1. Haha, I am the complete opposite. I like to make as much homemade as possible. If I can make it from scratch, I will! I even churn my own butter ;P Posted 7 years ago
