 The exact species of this mushroom is unknown, but it is in the Amanita amerirubescens group. Amanita expert Rod Tulloss has documented several eastern North American versions of Amanita rubescens, which now temporarily share the provisional name of &quot;Amanita amerirubescens.&quot; <br />

Orange-tan cap with remnants of volva present as warts. Cream colored gills. Stem had a pink hue. This mushroom was at least 10 cm tall.

    1. There seems to be a lot of variation within the species and also, some question as to whether it should be split into multiple species. I always check with Amanita experts when identifying these because there are so many similar ones, and some don’t even have official scientific names yet - they are just assigned numbers or provisional names. Cap: Grows up to 120 mm wide. Color varies from pale yellowish-tan or pale tannish-yellow at first, but eventually turn brown or umbrinous. Wounds are reddish-brown. The cap is tacky and broadly conic at first, then finally planar in maturity. Remnants of volva are present as warts, which are subpyramidal and easily removed.
