      Here’s my juvenile male for comparison:
      Wood Duck (Juvenile Male) Believe it or not, this duck is floating in a pond. The pond has been invaded by the highly aggressive duckweed (Lemnoideae).<br /> <br /> Juvenile males look very similar to female wood ducks. However, the juvenile males do have bright reddish-brown eyes and white markings on their face, similar to mature males. Overall, they are gray-brown with a white-speckled breast.         Males molt in late summer after the breeding period and this time period is called "eclipse". They still have the bright red eye and beak during this molt, unlike the juvenile males. So, I'm guessing this is a male in eclipse plumage. But, you should ask someone who is an expert, as I am definitely not :) Posted 7 years ago
