Furrow orb spider - Larinioides cornutus This spider was about 7-8 mm long. It lives on my deck along with several of its buddies. As pictured, it was having a midnight snack.

Numerous spiders have set up webs on my deck over the past few weeks - ever since moth week. I've added this spotting to my "Human Impact" list because there are now at least a dozen (probably more) spiders living on my deck. They moved in once I started leaving the light on for moth week. I've continued leaving the light on for a couple hours each night so I can check for moths, and thus, the spiders remain. I wonder how many insects have been killed by these spiders because of my actions, and how many new spiders will be born that would not have been. Humans so easily alter their environment. Something to think about. Furrow orb spider,Geotagged,Larinioides cornutus,Summer,United States, spider Click/tap to enlarge

    1. Thanks, it was cool! I sat and watched it for awhile. Ugh, not sure what it was doing exactly, but after 20 minutes or so, the fly starting shriveling a bit and getting more wrapped in silk. Made me a bit queasy, I will admit. But, awesome nevertheless! Posted 7 years ago
