White-footed Mosquito (Female) - Psorophora ferox Total length: ~6 mm. The legs, wings, and abdominal segments have purple iridescent scales. Tarsal segments 4 and 5 are entirely pale scaled. These mosquitoes prefer mammalian blood.

"Ferox" means: fierce, wild, bold, courageous, warlike, spirited, etc. It is definitely an appropriate name for this species as they inflict a very painful bite and they are so aggressive.

Female Psorophora ferox frequently bite people. Numerous viruses have been isolated from Psorophora ferox. However, the sylvatic nature of this species likely prevents it from being a major vector in transmitting pathogens to humans.

I found this mosquito sitting next to me on a chair on my deck. I was shocked to see it resting there! They usually attack fairly quickly, but this female was gravid, so she must have been sated for the moment.
1. Is it really so purple? Posted 7 years ago
    1. Yes, it really is that purple! It's beautiful. My all-time favorite mosquito is Uranotaenia sapphirina, which has blue iridescent scales. Although, Sabethes cyaneus is obviously really gorgeous too. Posted 7 years ago
      1. Nice, I had no idea. If one's blood is to be sucked, at least let it be one of these. Posted 7 years ago
        1. Haha, true. Although, their bite is much more painful than a typical mosquito. Here’s a video of Psorophora ciliata, which is similar in size ( 1-2mm larger) to Psorophora ferox. The video is from Argentina, but we have both species in the northeastern U.S. too. They are huge! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rr9xqqqwvi4 Posted 7 years ago
          1. Cool! What makes their bite more painful? Wouldn't it be in the interest of the mosquito to have a less painful bite? Posted 7 years ago
            1. Yes, it would be more effective to have a less painful bite. It's a combination of factors - larger mouthparts, haste and greed in feeding, and the compounds in their saliva. They really lack finesse, and Psorophora bites are compared with a sensation of being stabbed. Ps. ciliata are more painful than Ps. ferox. They are so bad that there are stories of tornado-like swarms of mosquitoes in the arctic that have driven caribou to run off cliffs and the density of such swarms being so thick that they can cause some animals to asphyxiate. 1. Why do you always post these kind of facts just before I go to bed? Posted 7 years ago
                1. Oh, so sorry...I hope you don't have nightmares - sincerely and sarcastically, hehe. Posted 7 years ago, modified 7 years ago

"Psorophora ferox" is a medium-sized mosquito native to much of North and South America. It inhabits wet woodlands, laying its eggs in temporary pools filled with rainwater. Larvae develop during summer in North America. They are aggressive feeders and give painful bites. The mosquito is reported to be active during both day and night.
