Size to 12 cm.
The adult is dark brown to yellow tan; blue to lavender spots and markings on cheek and gill cover; may have 'dark ear'spot, neon-blue saddle spot over upper tail base. Tail orange in Java sea.

The juvenile of 3-4.5 cm is blue-gray gradating to yellow over most of lower and rear body and adjacent fins; neon-blue lines on upper head and back; blue spot on upper tail base. Usually found around branching corals.

Adults inhabit lagoons and passages among branching.. more
