Coastal giant salamander rare! and there were at least two of them in this lake.. There's not really much in this photo for scale, but this salamander was probably at least about 30 cm long. It's likely that this is an adult that has chosen to stay aquatic. They can lose their gills and change to a terrestrial form, but that appears to happen less often than not with this species. The Pacific Giant Salamander is a species of salamander in the family Dicamptodontidae . It is endemic to the United States and Canada. There are three closely related species to this taxon: ''D. ensatus'' , ''D. copei'' , and ''D. aterrimus'' .
