Asarum canadense (Wild Ginger)
Asarum canadense (Wild Ginger) in a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest in northern Minnesota. These plants were growing in moist fine sandy loam soil with a moderate amount of humus in partial shade with other forest species such as Hepatica, Woodland Anemone, Yellow Violet, and Red Baneberry.
The long thin rhizomes, which are on or just beneath the forest litter, are aromatic and have a hot spicy flavor.
