  1. Excellent, what a gorgeous bird it is!
Checking to be sure, is this "Trichoglossus haematodus"? Reason I ask is because there's a few colorful "cousins":

    1. The T. haematodus you mention is commonly called the Coconut Lorikeet and is found more north - Papua New Guinea way and so on. The Rainbows are so common along the whole of the eastern seaboard, I'm confident this is one. There are however, three sub-species of the Rainbows and I'm not confident to pin any of those. 1. No worries about sub species, main species is enough. Thanks! Posted 4 years ago
      2. Sorry, forgive me, do you have the binomial name of the species on this photo? Problem is that the rainbow lorikeet seemingly is used for multiple species. If this is not Trichoglossus haematodus, what is it instead? Posted 4 years ago
        1. Trichoglossus moluccanus is the binomial I see in articles about the main species here on the east coast. Posted 4 years ago
  2. You are right, these are so common as to be almost considered "trash birds" (birds so common that they are not interesting to a Birder" - but man oh man, what a spectacular trash bird! I saw tons of them during my trip to Australia, but never ceased being thrilled! Posted 4 years ago, modified 4 years ago
  3. They're certainly known as the thugs around here. Although less than a quarter of the size, Cockatoos, Aus Magpies, Corellas King parrots every other bird will back off and run for cover when these guys want something. Fearless!

The rainbow lorikeet is a species of parrot found in Australia. It is common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. Several taxa traditionally listed as subspecies of the rainbow lorikeet are now treated as separate species.
