Lesser Maple Spanworm Moth - Speranza pustularia
This is one of only two moths that I spotted last night for moth week. It was raining, so I didn't expect many to come. But, this moth was tricky to get a shot of because it loved my ring flash. I wear my ringflash on my wrist, like a bracelet, for night photography. This shot was taken with my camera's flash.
White moth with faint reddish-brown lines on the wings. The postmedial line is usually the most complete line, and continues onto the hindwing. The wingspan was about 25mm.
The species name "pustularia" comes from the Latin word "pustulare" (to blister). It was given this name because the third orangish marking along the forewing costa was thought to be reminiscent of a pustule that had broken open and leaked a trail of pus down the wing.

"Speranza pustularia", the lesser maple spanworm, is a moth of the family Geometridae. It is found from Nova Scotia to Florida, west to Mississippi, north to North Dakota and Saskatchewan.
