  1. Maybe a robber fly? Posted 7 years ago
    1. Compare to Dioctria sp. I’m not sure which species you have in the Netherlands... Posted 7 years ago
      1. Excellent, that genus made me find it in one minute, supposedly this is the female of the Dioctria hyalipennis. Second photo on this observation:

Thanks, Christine, I can go to bed in peace now :)

        1. Perfect! So then, maybe she’s gravid as that could explain the distended abdomen. Posted 7 years ago
          1. Looks like it! Meanwhile I found a mind blowing guide:

Sorry, in dutch, but its such a well hidden gem. It has every single robber fly ever observed in the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark, it has a simple key system (only 2 steps), excellent photography, flight times, sexes, habitats, and its even understandable for an idiot like me.

What I still don't know is what the yellow little blob on the side of the body is. Not even the anatomy photo explains it. Do you know?

            1. The yellow blob is a haltere - a modified second wing. Posted 7 years ago
              1. And, wow! That guide is so amazing! Posted 7 years ago
                1. Yes it is, and the advantage of having a gold fish memory is that you can keep discovering it as if its new, as seen here 4 years earlier:
