Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) This photo is not as spectacular as some others of this species on Jungle Dragon. But, I have to add that when one is sitting in a small, 4 metre, boat with the motor not running and this whale surfaces less than 20 metres away it is quite awe inspiring. Now the law states that we are to remain at least 100 metres away which we were when we saw this whale sound and turned off the motor. It then surfaced very close to us. People watching? 1. Have to agree... magnificent! Even better when they appear very close to your door step. That red buoy is sort of in our “front yard”. Posted 7 years ago, modified 7 years ago

The humpback whale is a species of baleen whale. It is a rorqual and is the only species in the genus "Megaptera". Adults range in length from 14–17 m and weigh up to 40 metric tons. The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and tubercles on its head. It is known for breaching and other distinctive surface behaviors, making it popular with whale watchers.
