After hatching, nymphs cover themselves in a frothy &quot;spit&quot; made of tiny bubbles. The bubbles protect them from drying out and makes it difficult for predators to find them. Adult spittlebugs are called froghoppers. <br />

Small, green froghopper nymph (spittlebug). It was about 5 mm long.

"Philaenus spumarius", the meadow froghopper or meadow spittlebug, is a species of insect belonging to the spittlebug family Aphrophoridae. In Italy and America, it is economically important as one of the vectors of Pierce's Disease.
