Monarch Caterpillar J-ing - Danaus plexippus
I found this caterpillar attached to the underside of a milkweed leaf in the characteristic "J" shape, which indicates that it's getting ready to pupate. While J-ing, it no longer eats, but just hangs there and is particularly vulnerable to parasitoids and predation.
Spotted on milkweed that was growing on the edge of a pond.

The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. Other common names depending on region include milkweed, common tiger, wanderer, and black veined brown. It may be the most familiar North American butterfly, and is considered an iconic pollinator species.
