Squirrel Midden A squirrel midden is basically the mess of leftovers that squirrels leave after eating. These piles accumulate in the squirrel's favorite eating spots - such as on a stump, underneath a branch, etc. The midden usually consists of spruce and pine cone bits (the squirrels eat the seeds and leave the other bits).
This is likely the midden of the American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). I found the midden on a rotting log in a mostly coniferous forest.
1. Thanks :)

I love looking for and finding signs of wildlife. It shows just how much wildlife is around, but rarely seen.

  2. Very likely left by the American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) which typically inhabit coniferous forests. Posted 7 years ago
    1. Agreed, I mentioned this in my post above as being the most likely scenario :) Posted 7 years ago
