Squirrel Midden
A squirrel midden is basically the mess of leftovers that squirrels leave after eating. These piles accumulate in the squirrel's favorite eating spots - such as on a stump, underneath a branch, etc. The midden usually consists of spruce and pine cone bits (the squirrels eat the seeds and leave the other bits).
This is likely the midden of the American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). I found the midden on a rotting log in a mostly coniferous forest.

Love the growing "Signs of Wildlife" list, it's very educational. Posted 7 years ago
I love looking for and finding signs of wildlife. It shows just how much wildlife is around, but rarely seen. Posted 7 years ago
