Wingstem
A perennial growing to 2.5 metres and 90 cm spread. Flowers are yellow, from summer through to autumn, very attractive to butterflies. Leaves are long, rough-feeling, lanceolate and alternating.
The preference is full sun to light shade and moist to mesic conditions. Habitats include moist prairies, moist meadows near rivers and woodlands, woodland openings, woodland borders, floodplain forests, areas adjacent to woodland paths, thickets, pastures, abandoned fields, and roadside ditches.

Verbesina alternifolia is known as wingstem or yellow ironweed. This is a tall, yellow-blossomed plant found throughout most of the midwest and east US, outside of New England. It is listed as Threatened in New York.
