
Gypsy Moth Caterpillar - Lymantria dispar
Larvae can be distinguished from other species of caterpillars by their spots. They have 5 pairs of blue spots and 6 pairs of red spots. They also have long, hair-like setae covering their bodies. This particular caterpillar was pretty big - probably about 5-6 cm.
Spotted low in the vegetation in a meadow.

Lymantria dispar, the gypsy moth, are moths in the family Erebidae. Lymantria dispar covers many subspecies, subspecies identification such as L. d. dispar or L. d. japonica leaves no ambiguity in identification. Lymantria dispar subspecies have a range which covers in Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and South America.
