Red Squirrel Absolutely beside myself today when I saw my first Red squirrels. I visited Alverstone Nature Reserve on the Isle of Wight where the squirrels have a safe haven in beautiful woodland. The staff put out food for them and this one is tucking into some hazelnuts that I had left over from Christmas! The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel is a species of tree squirrel in the genus ''Sciurus'' common throughout Eurasia. The red squirrel is an arboreal, omnivorous rodent.

In Great Britain, Italy and Ireland, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years. This decline is associated with the introduction by humans of the eastern grey squirrel from North America and habitat loss. Due to this, without conservation the species could be extirpated from Britain by 2030.
