Meadow Brown Butterfly (Maniola jurtina)
The Meadow Brown usually rests with its wings closed, a similar butterfly the Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus) , sometime called the Hedge Brown, is smaller and more orange than the Meadow Brown and has double pupils on its eyespots.
The Meadow Brown, "Maniola jurtina", is a butterfy found in the Palearctic ecozone. Its range includes Europe south of 62 N, Russia eastwards to the Urals, Asia Minor, Iraq, Iran, North Africa and the Canary Islands. The larvae feed on grasses.
