American Black Bear - portrait, Zie-Zoo, Netherlands
The smallest of 3 bear species in North America, this species having a whopping 16 sub species. This portrait makes it look aggressive, yet in reality it's a gentle giant that was merely taking a fountain bath in this zoo. The name of this male bear is "Freggel", which even in dutch is a strange name. It's the father of twins "Tommy" and "Anika" which since have been moved to another zoo.

The American black bear is a medium-sized bear native to North America. It is the continent's smallest and most common bear species. Black bears are omnivores with their diets varying greatly depending on season and location. They typically live in largely forested areas, but do leave forests in search of food.
