Spittlebug - Philaenus spumarius
Small, green froghopper nymph (spittlebug). After hatching, nymphs cover themselves in a frothy "spit" made of tiny bubbles. The bubbles protect them from drying out and makes it difficult for predators to find them. Adult spittlebugs are called froghoppers.
**I took this spittlebug out of its spit to show my kids, observe it, and take a picture, then I put it back.
"Philaenus spumarius", the meadow froghopper or meadow spittlebug, is a species of insect belonging to the spittlebug family Aphrophoridae. In Italy and America, it is economically important as one of the vectors of Pierce's Disease.
