A Black Oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani)

This fellow was watching his or her nest which was near by. Does it look like this bird is carrying an orange pencil crayon in its mouth?

  1. Cool fact:

"Black Oystercatchers from Alaska to about Oregon are entirely black, but southward from there birds show increasing amounts of white feathers and browner (less black) abdomens."

It looks like your observation confirms this cool fact! And yes, that's one bright beak! Especially compared to the feet.

    1. Have to say the oystercatchers around here are, indeed, all black. The article you referenced also mentioned they are noisy. That fact is also very true. They definitely let you know they are there! Posted 7 years ago
  2. Very cool looking bird! It's legs look so out of place - like chicken legs. Posted 7 years ago
    1. I’ll mention that to the next one I see but I am sure I’ll just get the normal noisy response. Their legs seem to serve their purpose well as strange as they appear. Posted 7 years ago

The black oystercatcher is a conspicuous black bird found on the shoreline of western North America. It ranges from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to the coast of the Baja California peninsula.
