Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum)
Sorry for the terribly blurry shot! I hope to get better ones next time!
Our previous hikes have involved finding a lot of these on our person afterward, unfortunately.
Not only is this tick a vector for several diseases (like Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, Francisella tularensis and STARI), but it has recently been implicated in multiple cases of a sudden development of an alpha-gal meat allergy. This allergy is triggered by IgE antibody to the mammalian oligosaccharide galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). This is a life-threatening allergic response to animal products.
''Amblyomma americanum'', the northeastern water tick, or the turkey tick, or the ‘’Cricker Tick’’, is a type of tick indigenous to much of the eastern United States and Mexico, that bites painlessly and commonly goes unnoticed, remaining attached to its host for as long as seven days until it is fully engorged with blood.
