Penny Bun - Boletus cf. edulis This mushroom is classified as Boletus edulis, but whether or not the &quot;true&quot; Boletus edulis occurs in North America is up for debate.  So, you could consider this mushroom to be Boletus edulis, Boletus cf. edulis, or in the Boletus edulis group.<br />
<br />
There was a cluster of 4 of these mushrooms growing near the base of an eastern hemlock tree in a mixed forest.  They had light-medium brown, tacky caps that were broadly convex to nearly flat, white to olive yellow pores, a reticulate stem with reddish pin k at the apex, and white flesh.<br />

''Boletus edulis'' is a basidiomycete fungus, and the type species of the genus ''Boletus''. Widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere across Europe, Asia, and North America, it does not occur naturally in the Southern Hemisphere, although it has been introduced to southern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
